New car sales rise a massive 16 per cent for Dec 09
Friday January 8, 2010
Sales of new cars in Australia for the last month of 2009 have recorded a significant rise as more and more Australians begin to return to the new cars market.
According to Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) data, the sales of new motor vehicles in December 2009 rose 15.9 per cent higher than that same month in 2008. Overall for the year of 2009 Australians bought 937,328 passenger cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles, which is down 7.4 per cent compared to the entire year of 2008.
When it came down to the most popular cars Toyota remained the best performing brand for the seventh consecutive year with a significant 21.4 per cent followed by Holden with 12.8 per cent and Ford with 10.3 per cent.
FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar stated that the results were viewed as "exceptional" when taking into consideration the economic climate during this period.
"The ';game changing' measure that restored confidence in the marketplace and stimulated additional demand was the bonus tax break for business," Mr McKellar said.
"The final outcome for the year has surpassed the industry's original expectations by some 57,000 vehicles and a significant proportion of this additional volume can be attributed to the tax break,"
When it comes to potential influences for 2010 the FCAI warns of the impending interest rate rises on car sales although car sales are still predicted to reach around 940,000 and higher.
"There is a real risk that if market lending rates are further increased, excessively, the momentum of the economic recovery now underway could be damaged,"
"The challenges of the past year have not yet fully passed so 2010 will be a year of consolidation for the industry," Mr McKellar said.
